Becoming Istanbul, exhibtion at SALT, Istanbul.

Becoming Istanbul explores contemporary Istanbul through an
interactive database of over 400 media. An up-to-date collection
of artists’ videos, photography series, documentaries, news reports,
cartoons and architectural projects, the database is organized
according to 80 concepts that instrumentalize typical discourses
relating to the city and suggest new points of view. Its media include
the visual productions of artists and researchers who have
problematized actors and phenomena typically disregarded in urban
discourse, as well as the declarations of decision makers involved in
Istanbul’s current transformations.

ARTIST TALK
Platform Garanti
MARIA ANDERSSON and IMAN ISSA

Tuesday, October 26 at 6 p.m.
Cezayir
Hayriye Str. 16, Galatasaray, Istanbul
1st Floor

Guest artists of Istanbul Residency Program, Maria Andersson
and Iman Issa will talk about their previous works and their
engagements with the residency program.

MARIA ANDERSSON will present a selection of her previous works
dealing with place and the relation between spatial and social
structures. During her presentation she will show examples of
work dealing with spatial organization, choreography of space
and places in trasition. Andersson’s recent project concerning
politics of place and during the residency period in Istanbul,
she has focused on a research which includes studies of the use
of public space and in particular the choreography of crowds.

MARIA ANDERSSON (b. 1978) is based in Stockholm. She studied BA
(Hon) Arts & Design at Central Saint Martins College in London,
MA in Fine Art at Konstfack, Stockholm. Her exhibitions include
Cash Flow, Botkyrka Konsthall, Stockholm (2010); Nano, Studio 44,
Stockholm (2009), Fifth Ecology, 727 Gallery, Los Angeles (2009);
Tell a friend, Bonniers Konsthall, Stockholm (2008). She works with
video, text and sound, often presented in site specific installations.
She is running the magazine STAD (City), which has released 3 issues
since 2009, together with an interdisciplinary editorial board.

IMAN ISSA will be speaking about her work by way of the intentions
and processes that have informed it, drawing connections between
different projects and tracing how one work may have led to the
creation of another. In her current project Material Issa investigates
the language of monuments and memorials and how these silent
voices commemorate and collectively represent significant figures,
places, and events. Her series of small sculptures and installations
propose alternative forms for existing structures that in her view
better express the specificity and personal significance of what the
original monuments were built to commemorate.

IMAN ISSA (b. 1979, Cairo) is an artist based in Cairo and New York.
Recent group and solo exhibitions include Subjective Projections,
Bielefelder Kunstverein, Bielefeld (2010); Can Altay / Iman Issa, Rodeo
Gallery, Istanbul (2010); Trapped in Amber, UKS, Oslo (2009); 7th
Gwangju Biennale (2008); Cairoscape, Kunstraum Bethanien, Berlin
(2008); Making Places, Townhouse Gallery, Cairo (2008); Memorial to
the Iraq War, ICA, London (2007). Her video works have been
screened at several venues including Tate Modern, London;
Spacex, Exeter; Open Eye Gallery, Liverpool; and Bidoun Artists’
Cinema, Dubai.

MARIA ANDERSSON’s residency is supported by IASPIS (Sweden). As one
of the selected resident artist of Accented Residency, IMAN ISSA’s
residency period is supported by Creative Collaboration Grant (British
Council, UK) and Platform Garanti Contemporary Art Center.
